This is an Election Year in Shandaken

It is more important than ever for all Shandaken Democrats to join the club. It's easy, and we only ask $5 annual dues. Send us an email. Please include your phone # and address. You can also mail your dues to our treasurer.

Eligible memers at our February meeting will be able to nominate candidates and vote for new club officers. The club will soon be engaged in the exciting process of selecting Democratic candidates for the upcoming Town Board elections. Be a part of the solution!

Membership & Voting Rights

A. Qualifications: Any registered Democrat residing in the Town of Shandaken who subscribes to, and desires to further the beliefs, as set forth in our Preamble, shall be eligible for membership, subject to the payment of dues.

B. Dues: There shall be a Five ($5.00) Dollar fee per individual member. All members will have equal rights within the club, except that non-residents of the Town of Shandaken shall not be officers, as provided for in IIID.

C. Member in Good Standing:

1. Membership shall fall due as of February meeting of each year, and may be renewed at the Annual Membership Meeting, and a person paying dues on or before that time shall be deemed to be a member in good standing through January meeting of the following year. A person will retain all rights of club membership to which (s)he was previously entitled for one calendar month after dues have expired. Thus, whoever tendered dues in December is eligible, without further payment, to exercise all rights of membership through January of the following year.
2. The period covered by per annum dues begins on the day such dues are paid (or if dues are mailed in on the date of the postmark) and extends through the end of January of the following year. There will be no refunds.
3. A member in default of dues for one year or less may remedy this default by paying both lapsed and current dues, and on such payment, shall regain, after 30 days, all rights and privileges of membership. The payment shall relate back to the date it was originally due.
4. A member in default of dues for more than one year shall be considered a new member.

D. Rights of Members: Immediately upon payment of the initial dues, each new member shall receive a membership card and a copy of the club's by-laws. (S)he shall have the following rights and privileges:

1.To receive timely (see Meetings) notice by mail /Email of all general membership meetings and any other notice provided for in these by-laws;
2. To attend and participate in membership meetings, executive committee meeting, and other committee meetings, and to be a member of committees, in accordance with provisions set forth below;
3. To have voting rights: there shall be one category of membership with regard to voting. Only full voting members, as defined in 4a, will be allowed to vote on the following:
a. election of the club's officers and members of the club's executive committee;
b. endorsement of candidates for political or party office, and resolutions tantamount to endorsement;
c. votes on referenda and other questions to be proposed on the primary and general election ballot;
d. procedural votes which have a significant impact on any one of the above;
e. amendments to the club's by-laws.
4. Full voting member shall:
a. have been a member for 60 days, inclusive, from the date his/her check was submitted by hand, or from the date of the postmark on the envelope if mailed. It goes without saying that his/her payment must have cleared; and must be a resident in Shandaken and a registered Democrat.
b. not be a voting member or hold office in any other political club within Shandaken.
5. Expulsion: Any member may be expelled for cause following:
a. a petition enumerating the reasons and signed by a majority of the executive committee or twelve regular members of the club.
b. at least two weeks notice by certified mail of the time and place of the membership meeting at which the charges will be heard.
c. a vote to remove by at least two-thirds of the regular members present provided there is a quorum

E. Code of Conduct

1.Members should support the principles and candidates of the Democratic Party.
2. Members act with responsibility and integrity with respect to Club business and within meetings.
3. Members must respect any confidential information regarding Club business or Club members, especially that declared to be so.
4. Violation of any of these can serve as grounds for expulsion.
